The Long Weekend

A Long Weekend in Punta Mita

Three nights on the Riviera Nayarit works better than it has any right to, provided the house, the boat and the table are arranged before you land.

Punta Mita suits a short stay unusually well. The transfer from Puerto Vallarta is under an hour, the peninsula is compact, and a staffed residence removes the friction that usually eats the first day of a trip: by the time the bags are open there is somebody asking what time the family wants dinner.

The shape of a good long weekend here is simple: one boat day, one golf or surf morning, and one afternoon in the villages. The rest is the house and the water in front of it.

Make the house do the work

The residences on the peninsula come staffed as standard, and the difference between a good weekend and a great one is usually the brief the chef gets before arrival: the dietary notes, the one dinner that matters, whether breakfast is a buffet or a bowl of fruit and silence.

Groceries are stocked before the family lands. It is a small thing that changes the entire first evening.

One boat day, chosen well

Banderas Bay is big enough to fill a week, but a long weekend gets one day on the water and it should be the calm one. Leave mid-morning, swim and snorkel while the light is high, have lunch aboard, and let the captain decide the route home. From December to March, the whales decide the route instead.

Leave the gates once

Sayulita and San Pancho, twenty to thirty minutes away, are the counterweight to the peninsula: markets, surf, small restaurants, colour. Go once, in the late afternoon, and be back before the road gets dark.
