Punta Mita
A headland on the Pacific where the jungle comes down to the beach and stops.
Punta Mita occupies the northern point of Banderas Bay, forty minutes from Puerto Vallarta, on a private peninsula of resort residences, golf and beach clubs. Behind it, the Sierra Madre runs down to the coast; in front, whales pass through the bay from December to March.
It works particularly well for two kinds of trip: multi-generation family weeks in a large villa with staff, and wedding weekends where the accommodation, the ceremony and the dinners can all sit within a short drive of each other.
Beyond the gates, Sayulita and San Pancho give the area a second character entirely — surf towns with markets, small restaurants and a different pace.
01
Why go
Villas with full staff
The residence market here is mature: houses with chefs, housekeepers and property managers as standard rather than as extras.
Golf and beach clubs
Championship golf on the headland, with beach clubs and resort amenities available to residence guests by arrangement.
A bay that suits families
Calm swimming, short transfers, whale watching in season and staff who make a large family week workable.
Weddings that stay in one place
Accommodation, ceremony, dinners and the after-party can all sit within the same peninsula.
02
Arrive
Puerto Vallarta is the airport, with strong North American connections and private handling. Transfers to Punta Mita run around forty to fifty minutes, longer in traffic through the bay.
Access to the peninsula is controlled, and guest lists for arriving visitors, suppliers and event staff need to be lodged in advance — a routine step, but one that catches out groups who leave it late.
- Puerto Vallarta is 40–50 minutes away by road
- Peninsula access is gated; arriving guests and suppliers need pre-clearance
- Whale season runs roughly December to March
- Hurricane season runs June to November — plan and insure accordingly
03
Stay
Resort residences and private villas dominate, ranging from four to ten bedrooms, most with pools, ocean views and staff. Resort hotels on the peninsula provide an alternative and are frequently used for wedding guests who prefer a room to a house.
What a residence includes in terms of club access, golf and beach club privileges varies by property and is worth confirming in writing rather than assuming.
- Club, golf and beach access varies by residence — confirm in writing
- Staffing is generally included; the level differs by property
- Larger groups often combine a villa with resort rooms
04
By water
Banderas Bay is large and generally calm: day boats to the Marietas Islands, sailing, fishing for marlin and sailfish offshore, and whale watching in season. Surf breaks around Sayulita and the point suit beginners and improvers.
- Day boats and sailing across Banderas Bay
- Sport fishing offshore; Marietas Islands with permits
- Whale watching December to March
- Surf lessons and boards around Sayulita and the point
05
At the table
Dining divides between the resort restaurants and beach clubs on the peninsula, and the independent places in Sayulita, San Pancho and Bucerías, which are where the more interesting cooking is.
For villa stays, the in-house chef handles most meals, and a good one will shop the local markets rather than cook a generic resort menu. Private dinners on the beach or at the property are straightforward to arrange.
- Resort and beach club dining on the peninsula
- Sayulita, San Pancho and Bucerías for independent restaurants
- Villa chefs are standard and central to the week
- Requests remain subject to venue confirmation
06
After dark
Evenings are low-key: dinner, a drink at the beach club, and back to the house. Sayulita has a small, cheerful bar scene, and Puerto Vallarta an hour away has more, including a well-established late scene.
- Quiet evenings on the peninsula by design
- Sayulita for small bars and live music
- Puerto Vallarta for a fuller late scene, with drivers arranged

Weddings and private events
Punta Mita is a well-established wedding destination with a professional supplier base. Ceremonies happen on beaches, at resorts and at private residences; receptions typically at the same property or a beach club.
Residence event permissions are specific and must be verified in writing — guest counts, music, curfews, outside vendors and additional deposits all vary by property and by the resort association’s rules. Supplier and guest access to the gated peninsula also needs pre-clearance.
- Beach, resort and private-residence ceremonies
- Residence event permissions and association rules must be verified
- Supplier and guest access requires advance clearance
- Mexican civil formalities require documents and lead time; many couples marry at home first
08
Experience
Golf on the headland, whale watching in season, cooking classes and market visits in the villages, horseback riding on the beach, and the Sierra Madre behind for hiking and waterfalls.
Wellness travels well here — practitioners come to the villa, and the resorts have serious spas.
- Championship golf on the peninsula
- Sayulita and San Pancho for markets, surf and shopping
- Cooking classes and market mornings
- In-villa wellness and resort spas
