Los Angeles
A hundred miles of city where the address you choose decides the trip you have.
Los Angeles is not a city with neighbourhoods so much as a collection of towns that happen to share a freeway system. Where you stay determines what your days look like far more than in any other American city: Malibu is a different holiday from West Hollywood, which is a different holiday from Santa Monica.
For private travel, the draws are the private homes — architecturally serious houses in the canyons, on the coast and in the hills — the restaurants, and the ease of combining a city stay with the desert, the wine country or the coast north.
Traffic is the organising constraint. Any itinerary that ignores it will fail, and the honest advice is usually to do fewer things further apart.
01
Why go
The houses
A rental market of genuinely significant architecture, from mid-century hillside houses to contemporary estates.
The coast
Malibu, the Palisades and the drive north, which turns into one of the best road trips in America.
Restaurants and neighbourhoods
A dining city that rewards specificity — the right room in the right area, not the famous one across town.
A base for the west
Palm Springs, Santa Barbara and the wine country are all inside a comfortable drive.
02
Arrive
Van Nuys is the busiest general aviation airport in the region; Burbank and Santa Monica also serve private traffic, and LAX handles commercial. Which field makes sense depends entirely on where you are staying.
Helicopter transfer operates subject to noise rules and site permissions. Ground transportation should be arranged as hourly chauffeur rather than point-to-point.
- Van Nuys and Burbank for private traffic; choose by destination
- Traffic makes journey times highly variable — build in margin
- Hourly chauffeur is more practical than individual transfers
03
Stay
Private homes in the hills, canyons and along the coast, plus a strong hotel market across Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Santa Monica and downtown. Home rentals in Los Angeles carry local regulation on short lets; anything proposed will have been checked for compliance.
The practical decision is geography: pick the base closest to whatever you are actually here for.
- Short-term rental regulation applies — compliance is checked
- Beverly Hills and West Hollywood for dining and shopping
- Malibu and the Palisades for the coast and quiet
- Downtown for events and business
04
At the table
Los Angeles dining is neighbourhood-specific and enormously varied — from tasting rooms with long lead times to the best casual food in the country. The right recommendation depends on where you are sleeping and what you are doing that evening.
Private dining rooms and buyouts are available across the city and are the practical route for groups and for privacy.
- Dining is neighbourhood-led; avoid cross-town dinners
- Private rooms and buyouts for groups and privacy
- Leading rooms require advance requests
- All requests remain subject to venue confirmation
05
After dark
Hotel bars, restaurant bars, live music, clubs on the Sunset side, and members’ clubs where a legitimate access pathway exists. Evenings are earlier than New York and the city empties faster.
A driver for the evening is not optional here. Door policies and age requirements are enforced, and access requests remain subject to venue approval.
- Hotel and restaurant bars, live music, Sunset-side venues
- Members’ club requests only where a legitimate pathway exists
- Drivers for the whole evening — distances are significant
- Access requests remain subject to venue approval
06
Weddings and private events
Private estates, hotels, galleries, studios and coastal venues all host events, with the deepest production and entertainment supplier base in the country.
Private-property events are regulated: permits, noise ordinances, parking plans and neighbour notification all apply in the hillside and coastal areas. These are confirmed in writing before planning proceeds.
- Estates, hotels, galleries and coastal venues
- Permits, noise ordinances and parking plans apply to private events
- Exceptional production, entertainment and photography suppliers
- California licensing is straightforward with advance planning

Experience
Architecture — the mid-century houses, the Getty, the Broad — and the canyons for hiking early. Beyond the city: the Pacific Coast Highway north, Santa Barbara and the wine country, and the desert two hours east.
Wellness, studios and personal training here set the American standard, and the city is unusually good for a health-led week.
- Architecture tours and museum visits with private guides
- Canyon hiking and coastal mornings
- The Pacific Coast Highway and Santa Barbara
- Wellness, fitness and recovery at a very high standard
