Chicago
The best-built city in America, and the one most people underestimate.
Chicago is a city of architecture and water: a downtown of genuinely significant buildings, a river running through it, and twenty-six miles of lakefront that in summer functions as the city’s garden.
It is also an underrated dining city — serious tasting rooms, a deep neighbourhood restaurant culture, and the best steakhouses in the country — and an easy business base, with two airports and a compact, walkable core.
Summer is glorious and short. Autumn is beautiful. Winter is genuinely cold, and the city’s indoor life — museums, restaurants, music — is correspondingly excellent.
01
Why go
Architecture
Sullivan, Wright, Mies and everything after, best seen from the river.
The dining
Tasting rooms, neighbourhood restaurants and steakhouses, all without New York pricing.
The lakefront in summer
Beaches, boats, running paths and festivals along the water.
Efficient for business
Compact, walkable, well connected, with strong private aviation infrastructure.
02
Arrive
O’Hare and Midway both serve the city, with Midway and the executive airports handling significant private traffic. Downtown is around thirty to forty-five minutes from either, longer in peak traffic.
The city centre is genuinely walkable, which makes chauffeur arrangements simpler here than in most American cities.
- O’Hare and Midway, with strong private handling
- Downtown is 30–45 minutes from either airport
- The core is walkable — hourly chauffeur is usually enough
03
Stay
Hotels along the Magnificent Mile, in the Loop and in the West Loop, plus residences and serviced apartments for longer stays. The West Loop puts you closest to the restaurants; the Gold Coast and Streeterville are closer to the lake and the shops.
- West Loop for dining, Gold Coast and Streeterville for the lake
- Residences and apartments for longer stays and families
- Summer weekends and conference weeks fill quickly
04
At the table
Chicago eats extremely well: tasting menus at the top end, a West Loop restaurant corridor that is among the best in the country, classic steakhouses, and neighbourhood cooking from every immigrant tradition the city has absorbed.
Private dining rooms are widely available and comparatively easy to secure, which makes group dinners and client entertaining simpler here than in New York or Los Angeles.
- Tasting rooms, the West Loop corridor and classic steakhouses
- Private dining rooms are widely available for groups
- Reservations at leading rooms still need advance requests
- All requests remain subject to venue confirmation
05
After dark
Cocktail bars, jazz and blues rooms with real history, hotel bars with views over the river, and clubs in River North and the West Loop. The music scene is the distinguishing feature and worth building an evening around.
- Jazz and blues venues with genuine history
- Cocktail bars and rooftop bars along the river
- Access and table requests remain subject to venue approval
06
Weddings and private events
Hotels, museums, historic halls, rooftops and lakefront venues, with a strong supplier base and a professional events industry serving the convention trade year-round.
Summer Saturdays at leading venues are committed well ahead; winter offers genuine availability and value.
- Museums, historic venues, hotels and rooftops
- Summer weekends commit early; winter has real availability
- Illinois licensing is straightforward with a short waiting period
- Lakefront and park settings require permits
07
Experience
The architecture boat tour, which is genuinely the best introduction to any American city. Beyond it: the Art Institute, the lakefront by bike, sport across four major leagues, comedy and theatre, and the neighbourhoods — Pilsen, Andersonville, Hyde Park — that most visitors never reach.
- Architecture tours by river and on foot
- The Art Institute and the museum campus
- Lakefront cycling, beaches and boats in summer
- Sport, theatre and comedy year-round
