United Arab Emirates
Abu Dhabi
The quieter emirate, and increasingly the more interesting one.
Abu Dhabi is larger, flatter and calmer than Dubai, and has spent the last fifteen years building a cultural district rather than a skyline. The result is an emirate that suits a different kind of trip: island resorts, significant museums, mangrove channels, and desert that starts in earnest an hour inland.
It sits ninety minutes down the road from Dubai, which makes combining the two straightforward — and makes Abu Dhabi a sensible base for anyone who wants the region without the intensity.
As with Dubai, the winter months are the season; summer is for indoors.
01
Why go
Island and beach resorts
Saadiyat, Yas and the outer islands hold resorts with real beaches and considerable space.
Culture with substance
The Saadiyat cultural district is a serious, still-growing collection of museums and architecture.
The Empty Quarter
Desert on a scale Dubai does not have, with resorts deep in the dunes at Liwa.
Motorsport and events
A racing calendar and a growing programme of concerts and sporting events on Yas Island.
02
Arrive
Abu Dhabi International serves the emirate with strong private handling; Dubai is ninety minutes away by road and is often the practical arrival point. Al Bateen, close to the city, handles business aviation.
Distances within the emirate are large — Liwa is around two and a half hours inland — and journeys should be planned accordingly.
- Abu Dhabi International and Al Bateen serve private traffic
- Dubai is 90 minutes by road and often the arrival point
- Inland desert destinations are two hours or more from the city
03
Stay
Beach resorts on Saadiyat, resorts and hotels on Yas close to the circuit and the parks, city hotels along the Corniche, and desert resorts inland at Liwa or in the Al Ain direction.
For families, Yas and Saadiyat both work well. For a quieter trip, the outer island resorts and the desert are the stronger choices.
- Saadiyat for beaches and museums, Yas for events and families
- Desert resorts at Liwa for a genuinely different two nights
- Villa rental stock is limited compared with Dubai
04
At the table
Dining is hotel-led with a growing independent scene, and Emirati cooking is more visible here than in Dubai. Standards are high and the pace is calmer.
Licensing follows the same pattern as the wider UAE, tied largely to hotels and licensed venues, with Ramadan affecting hours.
- Strong hotel dining and a developing independent scene
- Emirati cooking is more accessible here
- Licensing and Ramadan hours apply
- Requests remain subject to venue confirmation
05
After dark
Evenings are calmer than Dubai: hotel bars, beach clubs, restaurant terraces, and event-driven nights around the circuit and the arena. It is a destination for a good dinner rather than a long night.
- Hotel bars, beach clubs and terraces
- Event weeks bring concerts and late programming to Yas
- Dress codes and conduct rules are enforced
06
Weddings and private events
Resorts, ballrooms, desert camps and island venues host events with strong production support. Permits, alcohol licensing and venue-specific rules apply, and legal formalities for non-residents require current specialist advice.
- Resort ballrooms, beach venues and desert camps
- Permits and licensing confirmed in writing before planning
- Corporate and incentive programmes are well supported
07
Experience
The cultural district on Saadiyat, the Grand Mosque at dusk, kayaking the mangroves, falconry and desert driving inland, and the circuit and theme parks on Yas for families.
Wellness is well served by the resorts, and Al Ain and the oases inland make a good day away from the coast.
- Saadiyat museums and the Grand Mosque
- Mangrove kayaking and coastal wildlife
- Liwa and the Empty Quarter for desert driving
- Yas Island for motorsport and family attractions
